QR Codes: Another Link Between the Physical and Digital
July 8, 2006
I did some work on how QR codes fit into the future of mobile behavior recently, and was reminded about them this morning looking through Smart Mobs. QR codes are 2D bar codes which, while developed in 1994 as a way of putting more identifying data on car parts in Japan, have found a new life in the world of cameraphones.
They are now predominantly used to allow mobile users to scan the codes on ads, products, in magazines, and many other places, and have their mobile jump to related content on the Web, purchase a product (such as a ringtone or MP3) or grab contact information about a company or person.
The QR Code shown here is for Google Mobile. You can see our bright, shiny new one for Smartspace below and to the left in the sidebar. A QR code creator and reader software are available from Kaywa .
